Drum Lessons

1:1 DRUMs tuition at school

Key Stage One and Two children can learn drums in their school without even owning their own drum kit with our Drums in Schools tuition programme. Available in both Primary and Secondary schools throughout Buckinghamshire, our 1:1 drum lessons provide students with the tools they need to learn drums in a fun and engaging way, practise (quietly!) at home, and to prepare them for achieving their drum grades with Trinity College London Grade Syllabus.

  • Enrolling is easy, just fill out our Enrolment form which will provide us with some essential details about which programme the student would like to join, and we will offer your place for the upcoming academic term and provide a link to pay your term fee, as well as any additional information you may need regarding course materials etc.

Please note that places are subject to availability, and prompt payment is required to secure the student’s place on the programme.

Learning the drums takes time, patience and practise, so it’s important that the student is committed to ‘giving it a go’. Please note that when you enrol the student you are committing to a full academic year of lessons, with a term’s notice period should you wish to cancel.

  • 1:1 Drum Tuition Pricing

Students receive 33 x 20 minute lessons at a total cost of £445.50 over the entire academic year (£13.50 per lesson)

Payments are made in termly instalments:

    Autumn Term

    Spring Term

    Summer Term

    10 Lessons = £135.00

Can my school help fund drum tuition?

Some schools have a budget to help with music tuition, this is often covered by Pupil Premium. Please contact your School Office or Head of Music to find out if funding is available for your child. Please don’t assume that all pupil premium students will be funded, this will need to be confirmed by the school management team.

Pupil Premium is additional funding for publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers.

Currently AVA Secondary School offers partial funding for drum lessons (£126.50 per term / £379.50 per academic year)

  • Music tutoring days and time slots are arranged between your school and Music in Schools UK, and will be within school hours.

Lesson schedules are organised for you during the first week of September, following the completion of all enrolments. Music tutoring sessions may fall on different days/times each week to prevent repeated absences during break times and school lessons.

  • We teach drum techniques, rhythms and music theory in a way which compliments more modern music genres including pop and rock music.

Students learn from Slammin’ Simon’s Guide to Mastering Your First Rock & Roll Drum Beats! This book helps teach young aspiring drummers all the rudiments, grooves and fills they need to get drumming in no time!

It’s possible for a dedicated student to begin drum lessons in Year 3 and leave Year 6 having excelled in their Grade 3 Exam, a high standard for this age and great preparation for Secondary school musical education.

Our programme prepares students for Trinity College London Rock & Pop Grade Syllabus (Drum Kit initial - Grade 8). Parents or guardians will be advised when the student is ready to take their grade entry exams. Information on submitting a grade entry will be provided by your tutor. Grade exam entries are now submitted digitally, so will need to be recorded at home. You can find out more information about digital performance submissions at the Trinity College London website.

  • What equipment do students need?

Music in Schools provide an electronic drum kit to each school. The kit is kept set up at school and used during the drum lessons and for students to practise on during the rest of the week. The electronic drum kit is used with headphones or a small speaker, therefore not disturbing any neighbouring school lessons. To practise at home, students will need:

    1. Drum Sticks

    2. Practise Drum Pad

    3. Drum Throne / Stool

    4. Music Stand

    5. Relevant music books

    6. Drum Kit (optional)

More details on what is required for each of these items is below. Please ensure the student has all the equipment they need before they begin the school term.

    _

    Drum Sticks

We recommend beginner students use quality light weight wood tip drumsticks.

    Practise Drum Pad

It is important for all students who do not have a drum kit to practice on at home to buy a practice pad, with sizes ranging from 6" to 12". The practice pad is intended solely for home practice and is not required during lessons.

    Drum Throne / Stool

Drum Thrones, or Drum Stools can be adjusted to the correct height for the drummer and support good posture and a correct playing position. A junior drum throne is most suitable

Music Stand (for home use only)

Drum students require a music stand to keep at home. It is very important that their sheet music is at the right height in front of the student when practising.

    Books

All beginner students will need the following study material for their first drum lesson:

    1. Slammin’ Simon’s Beginner’s Bundle: 2 books in 1!Guide to Mastering Your First Rock & Roll Drum Beats and 20 Essential Drum Rudiments!

    3. Trinity College London Rock & Pop 2018 Drums Initial Grade (Trinity Rock & Pop 2018)

    4. Trinity College London Rock & Pop session skills for drums Initial – Grade 2 (Trinity Rock & Pop 2018)

    Drum Kit (optional)

Electronic or electric are recommended, students can practise without disturbing neighbours or the rest of the household and they are space saving. We recommend:

    Alesis Nitro Kit

    Carlsbro CSD130 Electronic Drum Kit

    Roland Drum Kits

  • Learning drums can be fun and beneficial for students in so many ways, and this instrument is uniquely great for focus, rhythm and working out excess energy. Students can learn drums recreationally, to support their education or to prepare for a future in music.

Learning drums in childhood offers significant cognitive, physical, and emotional benefits, including improved brain function, enhanced motor coordination, and better emotional regulation. Studies show that it can help to improve impulse control and motor skills, and impacts a student’s rhythm and coordination with long-lasting effect.
