Keeping Music Alive

Over the years, many people have asked me how I motivated my sons, Jack and Alfie, to practice the drums so much. I usually tell them that I've never had to push or nag them; in fact, my wife and I often remind them to take a break. Their commitment and drive come from a deep love for music and creativity, which has fostered a strong passion for playing both the drums, guitar and singing, as well as listening to a wide variety of musical styles and genres.

Throughout my 29 years of teaching music to children, I've witnessed many students transform into amazing musicians. They start by learning their first guitar chords or beats at just 7 years old and develop a love for their instrument which some have gone on to become successful professional musicians and music tutors. Engaging with music nurtures focus, dedication, perseverance, routine, creativity, mindfulness, and spirituality, along with collaboration skills when playing in bands or ensembles. These aspects of learning an instrument contribute significantly to developing life skills.

For many of my students, playing the guitar or drums acts as a means of escape, to the point where the music becomes their primary focus. I've seen this magic unfold on multiple occasions while watching my oldest son Jack play the drums; he gets so lost in the music that the creative energy seems to radiate from him, reaching the souls of the audience. It's truly astonishing. I will always remember a time when Jack played at a fundraising lunchtime event at Tesco. At just 5 years old, he was completely absorbed in the music, pouring his little heart into his drumming, only to glance up and see several shoppers watching in amazement with tears streaming down their faces. Music has a unique ability to touch the hearts of both the performers and the listeners.

As a family, music has always been a constant presence in our lives. Whether it's tunes from the smart speaker, melodies strummed on the guitar, beats on the drumkit or singing in the shower, music plays a significant role in our daily routine. I truly believe that music can positively impact children and enhance various aspects of life. I've witnessed this firsthand with my students over the years, as well as with my own sons.
